Welcome to the Church of the Holy Rood, Swinton.

Work began on the first church building on this site over 150 years ago, back in 1865. Since then, Holy Rood Church and the Memorial Hall have played a busy and active part in the life of the local community.

Today, there is lots happening in and around Holy Rood, with a whole range of social activities to suit all ages and interests, as well as chances to explore Christian faith and spirituality.

Holy Rood aims to be a friendly and inclusive community, where all are welcome, irrespective of background, religious commitment, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. Whether you're searching for answers to life's big questions, looking for activities to keep the children busy, or hoping to tread the boards in our annual pantomime, you'll be very welcome.

Visit our Church

At the very heart of Holy Rood is worship, where we encounter the mystery of God, and are invited to experience Gods love for ourselves. Our services at Holy Rood are always open to all, and we try hard to welcome newcomers and visitors. If youve never been before, please dont worry - somebody will greet you at the door, make sure you have everything you need, and help you feel at home. Coffee and tea are served after all our Sunday services, so that we have a chance to get to know one another. Please remember that children are always welcome. There is a special area in the church with bags of toys, books, and colouring materials, where you are welcome to sit with babies or toddlers during the service if you would like. We also have a Sunday school, and special childrens services on a regular basis.Below are details of our regular services. SundayRegular worship on Sundays is at 8.00 am, and 10.15 am. Both these services are celebrations of the Eucharist (sometimes called Holy Communion, or the Mass). The service at 8.00 tends to be smaller, quieter, and more traditional in nature. The service at 10.15 is larger, less formal, with music.Every month, on the first Sunday of the month, the 10.15 service is family worship, where we are joined by children from the uniformed organisations and the Sunday School for a communion service with music and a talk aimed especially at children. If you have never been before, and you have children, this is a particularly good service to start with. On other Sundays, we have a Sunday School which meets during part of the service.Once a month, at 6.30 pm on Sunday, we meet with other local churches for an ecumenical service. The style and location of this service varies from month to month. MondayMorning prayer is said by the parish priest in the church every Monday morning at 9.30 am. All are welcome as we dedicate the week ahead to God.WednesdayEvery Wednesday at 10.00 am, there is a short celebration of the Eucharist, with special prayers for healing. Afterwards, we meet for tea, coffee, discussion and fellowship.ThursdayOn the third Thursday of each month, at 6.30 pm, we hold a Taize service. This offers an opportunity to relax, de-stress, and spend time in contemplation and reflection, with candles, chants, background music, and guided meditation.Occassional ServicesHoly Rood runs a number of occasional services at different times of the year, such as Christmas, Easter, Harvest or All Souls. We also have a programme of regular events designed especially for children, such as our Christingle, Pancake or Easter Egg services.
