The church of St Nicholas is a beautiful and historic church set deep in the Dorset countryside. It forms part of a benefice with Bradford Peverell, Frampton and Stratton, with much cooperation between the four parishes. The church is well supported by the community, with services of differing types for all age groups. A very warm welcome is extended to newcomers to the village and to visitors.
The major part of the church building dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with the tower being the oldest part. The Sydling Clock is faceless, probably locally built, and dated 1593, which makes it one of the oldest in the country. The stained glass was mostly destroyed in Cromwell's time, leaving a glorious view from the East window up into the downs above the village.
The beautiful and well-tended churchyard featured in the film "Far from the Madding Crowd", and the fascinating gargoyles are much admired by visitors.
There is a thriving 'Friends of St Nicholas Church' organisation, raising much-needed funds for ongoing restoration work.
