Christians have worshipped in the church of St James the Great, Thorley, for over 800 years, during which time the church family has sought to serve God and the people of Bishop's Stortford. Our aim always is to understand more fully what Christ calls us to be, and to make him known; to offer a welcome to all who seek to know about him; and to give encouragement to the people of the community in their journey through life.
The ministry of St James' is expressed in various forms, but mainly through the celebration of the eucharist, the preaching of the word, worship, pastoral care to both church and wider community, small group fellowships, community projects, the Alpha programme for those seeking to know more about the basics of our christian faith, and, crucially, a ministry to the young in the church and wider community.

10:30 Family Service at St Barnabas
1st Sunday of Month:
Family Service - On the first Sunday of the month, adults, young people and children meet together for this our Family Service. Worship is led by the Orchestra, there is usually a short dramatic sketch to illustrate the theme of the readings and the sermon is accessible to the young people. This is a non-eucharistic service that lasts for about 1 hour.
3rd Sunday of Month:
Morning Prayer - This is an hour-long non-eucharistic service that is similar to the Parish Communion (see below). However, instead of the eucharist, we share testimonies of our walk with God, as a way of encouraging others in their journey into faith.
2nd, 4th & 5th Sundays:
Parish Communion - On other Sundays, the service is based on the Common Worship order of service. The Music Group leads the worship with hymns from Songs of Praise. The sermon is given by the Rector, the Curate or an invited speaker. The young people go to their different teaching groups before the bible readings but rejoin the rest of the church family for Holy Communion. The prayer team is available during and after the service to pray with those who have specific prayer requests. This service lasts for about 90 minutes and would appeal to anyone who prefers the traditional eucharistic service but in a less formal setting and with contemporary worship songs.
Every Sunday at 10:30 AM for 1½ hours

Wednesday
Little Worship
This is an informal service with songs and activities for parents and young children. The service is followed by coffee and a time for adults to chat and children to play. On the first Wednesday of the month, there is a Communion service in the Church. Little Worship is a lovely way for small children to learn about God in a very child friendly environment. It's noisy but fun and if you would like to join us on a Wednesday, you would be most welcome.
