In 1873 Revd Trefussis built the Church of the Good Shepherd, a small wooden building, just up the hill from the river, in Umberleigh.
Originally designated a temporary schoolroom and place of worship, it continued as a schoolroom until the mid 1920’s when a new school was built. It still serves the people of Umberleigh as a ‘Chapel of Ease’ to St. Hieritha’s, Chittlehampton.
The children have strong links with the Good Shepherd using it for Nativity, Carol and Christingle Services.
The Good Shepherd survived a major flood in 2001, with water knee deep between the pews. In the same year durng the Foot and Mouth outbreak it gave spiritual and practical help to the local farming community. After these events the parishioners designed and produced a commemorative modern altar frontal.
The Good Shepherd has an informal style of worship with a warm, friendly and welcoming congregation who meet on the 1st Sunday morning and 3rd Sunday evening of each month.
