St John’s is the Church of England parish church of Upper St Leonard's (Hastings) in the Diocese of Chichester.

There’s been a church here since 1865 - although this is our fourth building (finished in 1953 - see the history page of our website). Buildings are often challenging but God is good and recently we’ve been able to replace our ailing heating system; re-sand and seal the church floor, replace the old wooden chairs with some dead posh chrome framed chairs, and replace the broken grand piano.... all via generous legacies and grants from the Isabel Blackman Trust and The Veolia Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund. So now we have toasty toes... plus a special new liturgical solemnity (Heating System Sunday!) to have a knees up and celebrate all the good gifts God has sent our way recently.

We're also thinking about how our buildings would best serve the Kingdom of God, and we're considering re-developing our church hall complex. So if you are a local, or user of the existing facilities, please complete the questionnaire on our website - we really need to hear your opinion

Our 'style' is 'open Catholic', so the Eucharist (or Mass) is central to what we do. Our main service is the 10.30am parish mass on Sunday mornings, when the church family gathers round the Lord’s table in obedience to Jesus’ command when he said “Do this in remembrance of me...” (Luke 22.19); we are also one of the rare remaining churches that still has a robed choir that both leads our sung worship and strives to remind us of the greatness of English church music. Our Sunday School - the FROGs - meets during the first half of the service for the younger worshipper!

We aim to be open and welcoming to all, as you'll find out if you join us after a service for some ( fairly traded ) tea or coffee. We also try and take our environmental responsibility seriously and we’ve produced a green policy for St John’s. Our facilities include an amplification system, hearing loop, large print material and flat access.

There’s quite a bit going on and the atmosphere is very difficult to describe - it’s much easier to experience, so why not join us one Sunday? Check us out first on www.stjohnte.com

St Johns church hall was built for temporary worship while the bombed out St Johns was being rebuilt in the 1950s, and it’s been well used ever since. There is a big stage area and some kitchen facilities as well as large toilets and some storage areas. The picture here shows the hall in use for a Church lunch.A huge variety of groups use the hall and we aim to offer it at the highest standard and best value rates we can offer for community use. Circus skills to Tea Dances, Yoga to the RSBP, Driving Instructors meetings to a Polling Station, badminton to the Jewish community... it’s uses are legion! And @ £9.00 per hour it is within the budget of many small groups. For details and to book the hall, please contact Jack Pennington on 01424 715453
