Legend has it the site was originally a Roman shrine to the gods
of war, Minerva and Mars. There has been a place of worship
here for nearly 2,000 years. The Roman lighthouse or Pharos
next to the church was built in 70AD.
The present church was built in Saxon times and has the earliest
door arch of any church in England.
After being abandoned and used as a store house for about two
hundred years it was restored by Gilbert Scott and Butterfield in
the nineteenth century and is now a thriving Garrison church
serving the Army and local people.
