The magnificent church of St. Cuthbert is the fifth church to occupy the site, ranging from a small Saxon wooden structure, of which there is now no trace, through the Norman and Early English periods to the present building. This is largely a 15th century rebuild retaining many elements of the former churches so that the building itself has many reminders of its chequered history, through good times and bad.
The magnificent tower, one of the finest in Somerset, was restored in 1960 and the restoration of the beautiful painted ceiling of the nave completed in 1963.
The tower holds a fine peal of eight bells, which are rung regularly. Within the church the organ is by Sweetland of Bath (1864) and has a modern free-standing console.
The style of worship is central, the principal service on Sundays being the Parish Eucharist, and there are regular weekday services of Holy Communion. St. Cuthbert’s is the official church of the City, and the Mayor and Corporation attend in state on special occasions to occupy their designated pews.
Recent changes have helped to create a user-friendly multi-purpose church which is the focus of many events in the City of Wells. St. Cuthbert’s Music Festival, held annually in the first week of September, is a feast of midday recitals and evening orchestral and other concerts, as well as static displays, and attracts wide audiences.
The church is also used by other local orchestras and choirs for their performances.
The church has a fully equipped kitchen which can cater, not only for our many visitors, but for concerts and other events taking place in the church.
Application for the use of the church should be made through the Parish Office, which is situated in the southwest corner of the church. The office is open from 10.00 am to noon on Mondays to Fridays.
