St.Mary’s is an Anglican church which offers a variety of forms of worship. We offer a quiet Sunday morning service of Holy Communion at 8am followed by at 9.30am a traditional sung Eucharist with favourite hymns and a boys and men's choir. We are fortunate in having an excellent organ. At the 9.30am service a group for children over 4 is available - "Junior Church". At 4pm each Sunday we have The 4pm service - we haven't thought of a better name for it yet ! - a shorter less formal service for all ages (especially good for those with children). At 6.30pm each Sunday we have a service of Evensong - a quiet way to finish the day - except on the 4th Sunday of the month when we have a new service for teenagers.
Music plays an important part in our worship and is led by our Director of Music, Peter Miller and the choir of men and boys. The church was designed by Gilbert Scott, and opened in 1856. It is a 2* listed building built of red sandstone with Yorkshire stone pillars and is situated in the heart of West Derby Village at the entrance to Croxteth Park.It is regarded as a fine example of Scott’s work and has windows by Clayton and Bell together with some fine wood-work in the Chancel and Sanctuary. The style is 14th century Gothic, but because of the great expense of providing secure foundations for the tower, the original more elaborate design had to be significantly modified.
Rev. Mark Coleman is Rector of St. Mary's. The church telephone number is 0151 256 6600.
