Domesday Book records that in “Wilmerslye … a Priest is there and a church.” The development of the hugely imposing magnesian limestone structure that survives dates largely from the three succeeding centuries and reflects both the devotion and the prosperity of successive patrons. Its tall and elegant broach spire continues to dominate the otherwise low-lying surrounding landscape. Notable interior features include a 13th century stone effigy of a knight, a medieval prayer carved on a south door jamb and an unusual 17th century Spanish tiled mural of the Last Supper. The bulk of the interior was renovated in the 19th century and includes a magnificent Rood Screen and painted ceilings by Bodley and stained glass by Kempe. In the quiet setting afforded by the village of Womersley, St. Martin’s offers a tranquil haven for both public worship and private prayer. Nor should it be overlooked by those seeking to explore the beauty of Yorkshire’s historic churches.
