The Norman church was built 1130-50 A.D. Later, new pillars
were added on the North side and throughout the 13th and 14th
centuries additions and alterations took place as fashions and
needs dictated.

The church took its present shape in the 15th century when the
chancel was built, the fine timber roof was put in, and the tower
was added. The chancel was remodelled in Victorian times with a
new east window, by the artist Edward Burn-Jones and made at
William Morris' workshops, showing the risen Jesus flanked by
the four gospel writers.

There are services both morning- 11.00 a.m. - and evening -
6.30 p.m.

Common Worship is the main liturgy for services.

Opportunities for quiet reflection:
Many people come specifically to visit the church for its
remarkable history but there are increasing numbers visiting
simply to wander, to sit and to pray. It seems to be 'one of those
buildings' where spirituality almost breathes in and out from the
stones!

Opportunities for music:
In partial contrast to the quiet atmosphere, there are signs of an
increase in the number of concerts being held here. It is hoped
that the acoustics of the church will lead to a widening variety of
styles of music being experienced - some specifically Christian,
some serious classical, and some (one might say) that are just
for fun!

Quiet Days:
It is hoped to run days for reflection, from time to time, using
image and music and silence. These would be for those Church
and non-church people who feel the need for something other
than formal worship: time and space to engage with God - to
encounter Christ's personality and spirituality.
