A good number of us gathered in the churchyard at Middleton just as it was beginning to get dark on 22nd December, for a shorter crib service than usual (and no refreshments) - but, being outside, we could sing. The local birds joined us, with a mistle thrush particularly well in tune, some quarrelsome pheasants less so. Every year new and often highly original crib figures are made by local families, and this year we had a particularly good array, made by families at home and then painted and fired by Owen at the pottery. Children (and some adults) placed the figures in the crib, which this year is in the church porch, while Revd Bill told the Christmas story, and led some prayers. A collection was taken for the work with homeless people based at The Ark, in Shrewsbury.
