Lockdown services on Zoom: One good thing that came out of Lockdown 1 was that we suddenly got to grips with online services, and discovered that the technology is not too difficult to master, that it does still feel like a proper service, and that joining people in their own homes from across the Benefice creates a rather nice feeling of connection. If you are not already on the email list, to receive details of weekly services, please drop me a line [email protected]
Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day: Sadly with lockdown we cannot have a service inside or outside the Church with a congregation. We will have services, and details will be circulated.
Church remains OPEN: The Church remains open each day for you to visit, and we would be pleased if you would. There is sanitiser in the porch.
Christmas Bazaar: We have been looking at different possibilities, but the likely weather in November and the worsening Covid situation meant that we could not plan with any confidence, and so we will not be having the bazaar this year. Maybe an Easter Fair?
Stogumber School in Church: We have been very pleased to welcome Stogumber School into Church for their weekly music lessons with Helen Napper, which we hope will resume after lockdown.
Churchyard mowing: Many thanks for Sharon and Martin Campbell and Roddy and Maggie Storrs-Fox for their kind donations of a cut.
Glazed noticeboard: The Church has a surplus of noticeboards, and the glazed noticeboard by the gates needs some maintenance if it is not to deteriorate beyond repair, so we have agreed that the Parish Council will take ownership and sole use.
Brass Cleaning, Coffee and Chat: Assuming lockdown ends and rules permit, this will be at 10am on Saturday 12 December (Village Hall Christmas Dinner is cancelled and no service the following day). Even in socially-distanced groups of six in different corners of the Church, this should be an enjoyable catch-up with friends. If you prefer, you could take a piece of brass to polish at home.
Christmas services: We still plan to have Nine Lessons and Carols at 6:30 on Sunday 20 December, and Midnight Mass starting at 11:00 on Christmas Eve. No congregation singing is yet permitted but we will have the choir. Numbers for both would need to be limited (as above) so please email [email protected] to book a seat. If we cannot accommodate everyone, we can then look at holding an additional Christmas service. We hope to have some sort of Nativity earlier on Christmas Eve, possibly outside.
Ben Flenley’s last service: Sadly for us, Ben and Kathryn are retiring to Sussex, and his last service in Stogumber will be Eucharist at 10:30 on Sunday 27 December. Again, please email me to book at seat.
Pathways magazine: Publication has restarted and copies are left in the Church for subscribers to collect, or can be downloaded from https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/11345/news/
Help and support: If you need any practical or spiritual support during lockdown, please do get in touch and we will do our best to help.
With best wishes Julian Spicer, Churchwarden [email protected]
