 and ultimately celebration. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time o
 f temptation in the wilderness\, where he fasted and where Satan tempted h
 im. Lent asks believers to set aside a time for similar fasting\, marking 
 an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life\, ministry\, sacrifice\,
  and resurrection.\n\nAshes are an ancient sign of penitence and from the 
 middle ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with
  the sign of the cross. This is rooted in Scripture\, where dust was sprin
