DESCRIPTION:This is a solemn Christian service that marks the beginning of
the season of Lent—a 40-day period of repentance\, prayer and preparati
on for Easter. On this day\, worshippers gather to receive two important
signs:\n\nImposition of Ashes – Ashes\, usually made from the burned pal
m branches of the previous year’s Palm Sunday\, are placed on the forehe
ad in the shape of a cross. The minister often says words such as\, “Rem
ember that you are dust\, and to dust you shall return." The ashes symboli
ze human mortality\, repentance from sin and a desire for spiritual renewa
l.\n\nHoly Communion – The congregation then shares in Holy Communion\,
remembering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ through the bread and wine. This
sacrament emphasizes God’s grace\, forgiveness and the hope of redempti
on even as the season of Lent begins in reflection and humility.\n\nTogeth
er\, the ashes and the Eucharist express both repentance and renewal—ack
nowledging human frailty while also embracing God’s mercy and the promis
 e of new life.
