His role in Bosnia in the early 1990 s was significant\, traumatic\, and later became central to his public lif e as an MP and commentator. Who he was in Bosnia (1992–1993)-Stewart com manded the first British battalion deployed under UN command in Bosnia\, p art of UNPROFOR during Operation Grapple. His unit’s mission was officia lly humanitarian escorting aid convoys\, protecting civilians\, and negot iating access through hostile areas but in practice they found themselves in the middle of a brutal civil war. He arrived in Bosnia in 1992\, leadi ng an armoured infantry battalion of the Cheshire Regiment.\nHis troops we re often the first international forces to witness atrocities\, including mass killings\, ethnic cleansing\, and destroyed villages.\nStewart became known for his direct\, outspoken reports up the UN chain of command\, arg uing that Bosnian civilians needed real protection\, not just observation. \nHe and his soldiers were involved in evacuations\, including helping res cue around 2\,000 women\, children\, and elderly people from Srebrenica in April 1993.\nTwo members of his team\, Lance Corporal Wayne Edwards and h is interpreter Dobrila Kolaba\, were killed during the deployment.\nHis ex periences were harrowing. Stewart later described scenes such as mass grav es\, murdered families\, and the aftermath of massacres accounts that sha ped his later advocacy on military intervention and humanitarian protectio n.\nRecognition and impact -for his leadership in Bosnia\, Stewart was awa rded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).\nHe became one of the most pub licly recognisable British officers of the conflict\, frequently interview ed by UK and international media.
