The Choir of St Oswald’s has a membership of over 25. We are fortunate to have a balance of voices which enables us to sing music in 4, 6, and even 8 parts. The Choir’s repertoire ranges from the Renaissance Motets and Mass settings to the compositions of 21st century composers.
The choir rehearses for an hour on a Thursday evening and then sings for the Sunday 11am Parish Communion Service (Mattins on the 5th Sunday of the month) and weddings, as well as special services and concerts throughout the year. In the summer months we have a monthly Choral Evensong which is either sung by the Church Choir or a visiting Choir. These have included Chester Cathedral Choir, The Borders Singers, Vox Vocavit and Abbey Gate College Chapel Choir.
As part of the Church’s outreach, the Choir has sung at Threapwood Church, Bickley and Tarporley Churches. Several Evensongs have been sung by St Oswald’s Choir in Chester Cathedral and one Evensong in Hereford Cathedral.
To enhance the singing, we are privileged to have a historic two manual Lewis Organ which is maintained by Merseyside Organ builder Brian Jones.
The choir currently has vacancies for some sopranos and this could be an opportunity to increase the number of children in the choir, as recently some of the boys have now moved to the Alto, Tenor and Bass sections. For further details and to apply for an audition, please contact the Director of Music, Stewart Smith – email [email protected]
During the pandemic, services were recorded for YouTube viewing. These services contained singing by soloists from the Choir, then once we were allowed to re-open, small groups of the Choir performed, enabling the congregation to enjoy listening to some singing.
In July 2021 the Choir recorded its first CD which contains music for Advent and Christmas. The CD will be on sale in Church in October.
