DESCRIPTION:Durham Churches Together are  holding a special New Year's Eve
  service to reflect on the year past and welcome the new year to come. We 
 join our friends in Christ from the various churches in and around the Cit
 y for this service at the Cathedral.\n\nAn ecumenical candlelit service to
  which all ages are invited. A candlelight procession (bring your own cand
 les or lanterns) will depart Durham Market Place at 5pm and proceed to the
  Cathedral to join those who prefer to gather in the Cathedral.\n\nPreache
 r:\nFather Andrew Downie\, Parish Priest of St Cuthbert's Catholic Church\
 , Durham and Catholic Chaplain to Durham University.\n\nEveryone is very w
 elcome.\n\nAnd John testified\, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven
  like a dove\, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him\, but the
  one who sent me to baptize with water said to me\, “He on whom you see 
 the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit
 .” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God

 .\n\nThe Collect of the Day:\n\nAlmighty God\, whose blessed Son was circu
 mcised in obedience to the law for our sake and given the Name that is abo
 ve every name: give us grace faithfully to bear his Name\, to worship him 
 in the freedom of the Spirit\, and to proclaim him as the Saviour of the w
 orld\; who is alive and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\
 , one God\, now and for ever.\n\nAmen.\n\n(Common Worship).\n\nA Prayer as
  we Approach the New Year:\n\nGracious God\, as the trappings of Christmas
  get packed away and we\nturn our minds to the New Year\, we thank you so 
 much that your\nastonishing gift of love for us will never grow old\, neve
 r wear away\nand never be out of season. Help us to remember and treasure 
 those\nmoments over Christmas when we have felt that love welling up in\nu
 s. Help us to keep making room for it in our hearts\, and help us to be\ne
