DESCRIPTION:Ascension Celebration Readings & Prayers Ascension 13th May 20
 21\nAscension Day - Thursday 13th May\nOpening Hymn ‘Alleluia\, sing to
Jesus’\nCollects\nGrant\, we pray\, almighty God\, that as we believe yo
ur only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heave
ns\, so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwel
l\; who is alive and reigns with you\, in the unity of the Holy Spirit\, o
ne God\, now and for ever. Amen\nor\nRisen Christ\, you have raised our hu
man nature to the throne of heaven: help us to seek and serve you\, that w
e may join you at the Father’s side\, where you reign with the Spirit in
glory\, now and for ever. Amen.\nFirst Reading Acts 1.1-11\nIn the first
book\,Theophilus\, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the be
ginning 2until the day when he was taken up to heaven\, after giving instr
uctions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3After
his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proof
s\, appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking about the
kingdom of God. 4While staying with them\, he ordered them not to leave J
erusalem\, but to wait there for the promise of the Father.‘This’\, he
said\,‘is what you have heard from me\; 5for John baptised with water\,
but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’\
n6 So when they had come together\, they asked him\,‘Lord\, is this the
time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied\,‘It is
not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his o
wn authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come up
on you\; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem\, in all Judea and Sama
ria\, and to the ends of the\nearth.’ 9When he had said this\, as they w
ere watching\, he was lifted up\, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
10While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven\, suddenly tw
o men in white robes stood by them. 11They said\,‘Men of Galilee\, why d
o you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus\, who has been taken up
from you into heaven\, will come in the same way as you\nsaw him go into h
 eaven.’\nPsalm 47\n1 Clap your hands together\, all you peoples\; • O
 sing to God with shouts of joy. 2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared\;
•\nhe is the great King over all the earth.\n3 He subdued the peoples u
nder us • and the nations under our feet.\n4 He has chosen our heritage
for us\, • the pride of Jacob\, whom he loves.\n5 God has gone up with a
merry noise\, • the Lord with the sound of the trumpet.\n6 O sing prais
es to God\, sing praises\; • sing praises to our King\, sing praises. 7
For God is the King of all the earth\; • sing praises with all your skil
l.\n8 God reigns over the nations\; • God has taken his seat upon his ho
ly throne. 9 The nobles of the peoples are gathered together • with the
people of the God of Abraham. 10 For the powers of the earth belong to God
  • and he is very highly exalted.\nGlory to the Father\, and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning\, is now and shall be fo
rever. Amen\n \n Second Reading Ephesians 1.15-end\n15 I have heard of you
r faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints\, and for t
his\nreason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in m
y prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ\, the Father of
glory\, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know
him\, 18so that\, with the eyes of your heart enlightened\, you may know
what is the hope to which he has called you\, what are the riches of his g
lorious inheritance among the saints\, 19and what is the immeasurable grea
tness of his power for us who believe\, according to the working of his gr
eat power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from
the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places\, 21far a
bove all rule and authority and power and dominion\, and above every name
that is named\, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he
has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all thin
gs for the church\, 23which is his body\, the fullness of him who fills al
l in all.\nGospel (Gradual) Hymn ‘Rejoice the Lord is King’\nGospel Re
ading Luke 24.44-end\n44 Then he said to them\,‘These are my words that
I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about
me in the law of Moses\, the prophets\, and the psalms must be\nfulfilled.
’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures\, 46and he s
aid to them\,‘Thus it is written\, that the Messiah is to suffer and to
rise from the dead on the third day\, 47and that repentance and forgivenes
s of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations\, beginning from
Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And see\, I am sending u
pon you what my Father promised\; so stay here in the city until you have
been clothed with power from on high.’\n50 Then he led them out as far a
 s Bethany\, and\, lifting up his hands\, he blessed them. 51While he was b
lessing them\, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And
they worshipped him\, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy\; 53and th
ey were continually in the temple blessing God.\nOffertory Hymn ‘Praise
my soul the King of Heaven’\nMusic at Communion\nPost Communion Prayer\n
God our Father\, you have raised our humanity in Christ and have fed us wi
th the bread of heaven: mercifully grant that\, nourished with such spirit
ual blessings\, we may set our hearts in the heavenly places\; through Jes
us Christ our Lord. Amen\nClosing Hymn ‘To God be the Glory’\nReflecti
on\nAscension marks a step change in relationship with Jesus for the first
disciples\, paving the way for spiritual connection with God’s power at
work in the world - the Holy Spirit. We live in the in- between time\, whe
re the Kingdom of God is both ‘now’ and ‘not yet’ - the Spirit of
God is so much needed among us\, let us pray with Christians around the wo
rld ‘Thy/Your Kingdom Come’ with special immediacy in these days betwe
en Ascension and Pentecost. ‘Come Holy Spirit\, you are welcome here’
is a dangerous\, powerful\, beautiful prayer\, let us dare to mean it\, wi
th all the uncertainty as well as the comfort that may result.Amen!
