Church of England Diocese of Gloucester Newnham

News from the Churchwardens, July 2020

15 Jun 2020, midnight

The Bells Project has reached its formal conclusion and we are grateful to the committee members, and especially Andy Vivian, for the enormous amount of work they have done. Rather sadly, following the installation of the bells and a great deal of rainfall, it became apparent that repairs were needed to the spire. Steeplejacks replaced some of the worn and missing shingles in June as a temporary measure and we are now awaiting tenders for the reshingling of the whole spire.

The church is now open for private prayer, initially just twice a week: every Wednesday between 7 and 8pm and every Friday between 10am and 12 noon.  Just walk in, and please see the safety notice inside.

We have had very positive feedback about the Prayer Trail in the churchyard and we are hoping that this will become a permanent feature which is updated and changed on a regular basis. Thank you Joe for creating this.

Newnham Covid-19 Support Group: this initiative was set up with help from Siobhan Smith and Revd Joe. Almost 30 volunteers have been helping people in and around Newnham, Blakeney and Popes Hill. We now have links with similar local groups under the auspices of the ’Hub’ run by the Community Engagement Office at the District Council, and hope to build on this network in the future.

Preparations to appoint a vicar have been on hold during the present situation. We hope that the churchwardens in the benefice will be able to meet in the near future and we will keep you updated on progress.

Meanwhile, the Diocese has been updating and making some internal changes to the Vicarage. We are very grateful to Mark Ward, who has been mowing the grass and keeping an eye on the building for us. We are hoping to form a small working party to tidy up the garden soon.

We have been keeping in close contact with our school and Joe has been videoing his weekly collective worship, which is viewed by the children in their classrooms. We would like to record our thanks for the hard work and dedication of Mrs Nolan and all the staff during this difficult time. Jane and Bev
