Church of England Diocese of Lincoln Sempringham with Pointon

The Gilbertines

Founded by Saint Gilbert, The Gilbertines were the only English monastic order. Their mother house was at Sempringham and the order was unusual in that both men and women co-existed, albeit segregated on the site.

As the order was established, it outgrew the existing Parish Church of St. Andrews and so Sempringham Priory was built to the south. The church is still used for regular worship today, whilst nothing of the Priory remains visible.

The order grew to encompass 25 sites across England, which all disappeared by the 16th Century, following the Dissolution.
