DESCRIPTION:This exhibition traces the long life of storytelling in the Mi
 ddle East\, beginning with pre‑Islamic legends such as Gilgamesh and Ale
 xander the Great\, whose adventures shaped the imaginative world from whic
 h later tales emerged. It follows the formation of The Thousand and One Ni
 ghts as a collection\, explores some of its best‑known stories alongside
  later “orphan tales” like Ali Baba and Aladdin\, and shows how Wester
 n translators and Victorian publishers reshaped them for new audiences. Th
 e journey continues into the twentieth century\, where theatre and cinema 
 reinvented the tales yet again. Among the objects on display is an Afghan 
 war carpet whose imagery echoes the magical flying carpets of legend\, lin
 king ancient storytelling with the realities of history.
