Refurbished Newcastle Cathedral reopens to visitors

5 Aug 2021, midnight

Newcastle Cathedral, the ancient heart of a modern city, has been transformed...

Remodelled interior

The Nave has been transformed, with flexible seating, underfloor heating and new furniture for services and events. Visitor facilities include a shop area, café and improved disabled access.

Fascinating interpretation

Interpretation panels and a sound and light show are designed to bring 900 years of history to life, chronicling the development of the Cathedral as the ancient heart of a modern city.

Interactive displays

Digital screens tell the stories of some of the people commemorated in the Cathedral’s ledger stones. These historic grave covers have been protected and conserved as part of the redevelopments.

Trail and terrace

Follow the paved ribbon of ‘Newcastle Beatitudes’ (blessings) around the churchyards to the beautifully landscaped terrace. Here you can find space to unwind and learn more about the Cathedral in the context of the city’s historic quarter.
