Bishop Christine, ahead of the Church of England's Generosity Week, which runs from 26th September to 3rd October, recorded a video message and also sent out a special message to congregations, which we reproduce below
As you know, this Sunday marks the start of Newcastle Diocese Generosity Week during which we are invited to focus on nurturing and encouraging generosity. Generosity is right at the heart of our Christian faith – we are generous with our time, generous in our judgements of other people, and generous in sharing what we have with those who have not. We should be generous in everything that we do.
In my time as your Bishop, I have been inspired by so many acts of generosity across our Diocese, both large and small, and you can read about some of them here: https://bit.ly/2Xm6yjU (also available as the download from this web page)
It is fitting therefore that I share with you news of a wonderful act of generosity by Bishop Alec Graham who we very sadly lost in May this year. Many of you will have known Bishop Alec who became our Bishop of Newcastle in 1981 and who retired to Cumbria in 1997. He was much loved in this Diocese and is sorely missed. We have been very touched to learn that the Diocese of Newcastle has been named as one of the four significant beneficiaries in Bishop Alec’s will. These are early days and we do not yet know the value of his estate, but it is a gift highlighting Bishop Alec’s great love for the Church in the North East. We give thanks for this act of generosity and we are deeply blessed.
Another significant beneficiary is Northumbria Historic Churches Trust which, as you know, has supported so many of our churches over the years and which relies entirely on funding from generous individuals, parishes and grant making trusts. This gift from Bishop Alec will allow its much-valued work to continue.
Newcastle Diocese Generosity Week gives us all the chance to recognise the spirit of generosity as we seek to serve our loving precious God and celebrate how being generous enables mission and ministry to flourish in all our communities.
