The Cheviot Benefice
MORNING Worship for the
2nd Sunday before Lent
Preparation
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father,
the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit be with you: and also with you.
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it
The whole of creation bears the mark of your word.
With all of creation we bow down at your feet;
to worship your glory and speak of your love.
With praise and thanksgiving we give thanks for your grace;
With body and soul we praise your great name.
Hymn -
Forgiveness.
There are many times in the course of the day or the week that we fall short of the greatness that, made in God’s image, we are called to reach towards. In this time of thoughtfulness we think about those conversations, those moments and those encounters, when we could have better understood God’s will for us.
Lord, when did we misunderstand the call to love ourselves as you love us?
Lord, when did we not see the light in Christ in those around us? Lord, when did we squander the resources of the world?
Lord, we ask for your forgiveness.
May the God of love and power
forgive us and free us from our sins,
heal and strengthen us by the Spirit,
and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Collect for the Day
A readings from the Bible; Proverbs 8.1,22-31 Colossians 1.15-20
followed by a Hymn
The Gospel for the Day; John 1.1-14
A Short Talk
We declare what we believe:
With the whole Church:
We affirm that we are made in God’s image,
befriended by Christ, empowered by the Spirit.
With people everywhere:
We affirm God’s goodness at the heart of creation, planted more deeply than all that is wrong.
With all Creation:
We celebrate the miracle
and wonder of life,
the unfolding purposes of God,
forever at work in ourselves
and in the world. Amen
Prayers for others, ending with the Lord’s Prayer,
Our Father in heaven .........
Short Reflection
Closing Responses
O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works;
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will make music to my God while I have my being. AMEN
The Peace
Peace to you from God our heavenly Father; Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver;
The peace of the Triune God be always with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Final Blessing
Creator God, may our hearts of stone
become hearts of flesh that bleed for all your creation. Help us to mind deep within to find courage to continue. May we use our talents wisely, use resources justly,
for you have blessed us greatly.
God our Maker, strengthen our hearts
to go and work for the good of all creation.
Amen.
