DESCRIPTION:DATES: Tue 9th-13th October 2025\n\nWHERE: The Round\, Holy Se
 pulchre Church Hall\, Church Lane\, Northampton NN1 3NL.\n\nAll performanc
 es start at 7.30 pm\n\nPRICE: £10\n\nStep into a world of mystery\, heart
break\, and unforgettable characters.\n\nFollow young Nell and her grandfa
ther on a perilous journey through Victorian England\, fleeing danger afte
r their lives are thrown into disarray and destitution\, due to the machin
ations of an evil moneylender.\n\nA timeless tale of resilience\, tragedy
and the enduring power of hope.\n\nThe Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dicke
ns is not often performed on stage and so I set about adapting the novel t
o suit the performance venue.\n\nThere are many of the recurring character
 s of Dickens’s works: a nasty moneylender\, scheming legal clerks\, gent
lemen\, philanthropic gentlemen\, eccentric old ladies to name a few.\n\nT
he story has been compared to Pilgrims Progress\, with the journey taken b
y Nell and her Grandfather broken down into episodes\, in each of which Ne
ll learns something of life from the people she meets.\n\nDickens does not
spare your feelings when portraying the cruelties of working (or non-work
ing) class life in the 19th Century\, but amidst the suffering the overrid
ing message is of hope for better things to come.\n\nA central element of
the story is Grandfather’s addiction to gambling\, an issue still just a
s much a problem in the modern world. In the novel\, Nell pays the ultimat
e price for his weakness. In this adaptation\, being performed near to Chr
istmas\, I may need to insert a little more hope there!\n\nMasque is an am
ateur community based theatre group \, established in 1932\, and who perfo
rm 6 plays a year.\nTickets for each play are £10 and can by booked by ph
one on 07783 531542 or via the website www.masquetheatre.co.uk
