Hymns Old & New\n\n754 Ye quires of new Jerusalem\n70 Be Thou my visio
n\n12 Alleluia\, sing to Jesus\n755 Ye holy angels bright\n\nThe Colle
ct \nAlmighty God\, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have o
vercome death and opened to us the gate of eternal life: grant that\, as b
y your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires\, so by y
our continual help we may bring them to good effect\; through Jesus Christ
our risen Lord\, who is alive and reigns with you\, in the unity of the H
 oly Spirit\, one God\, now and for ever.\n\nReadings :  Genesis 22.1-18\;
  Acts 8.26-40\; John 15.1-8\nReadings for Easter 5\n\nGenesis 22.1-18\nAf
ter these things God tested Abraham. He said to him\, ‘Abraham!’ And h
e said\, ‘Here I am.’ He said\, ‘Take your son\, your only son Isaac
\, whom you love\, and go to the land of Moriah\, and offer him there as a
burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ So Abrah
am rose early in the morning\, saddled his donkey\, and took two of his yo
ung men with him\, and his son Isaac\; he cut the wood for the burnt-offer
ing\, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown
him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then
Abraham said to his young men\, ‘Stay here with the donkey\; the boy and
I will go over there\; we will worship\, and then we will come back to yo
u.’ Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and laid it on his son I
saac\, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them w
alked on together. Isaac said to his father Abraham\, ‘Father!’ And he
said\, ‘Here I am\, my son.’ He said\, ‘The fire and the wood are h
ere\, but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?’ Abraham said\, ‘God
himself will provide the lamb for a burnt-offering\, my son.’ So the tw
o of them walked on together.\nWhen they came to the place that God had sh
own him\, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He boun
d his son Isaac\, and laid him on the altar\, on top of the wood. Then Abr
aham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the ange
l of the LORD called to him from heaven\, and said\, ‘Abraham\, Abraham!
’ And he said\, ‘Here I am.’ He said\, ‘Do not lay your hand on th
e boy or do anything to him\; for now I know that you fear God\, since you
have not withheld your son\, your only son\, from me.’ And Abraham look
ed up and saw a ram\, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and t
ook the ram and offered it up as a burnt-offering instead of his son. So A
braham called that place ‘The LORD will provide’\; as it is said to th
is day\, ‘On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.’\nThe angel o
f the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven\, and said\, ‘By
myself I have sworn\, says the LORD: Because you have done this\, and have
not withheld your son\, your only son\, I will indeed bless you\, and I w
ill make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand
that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of the
ir enemies\, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain
blessing for themselves\, because you have obeyed my voice.’\n\n Acts 8
.26-40\nThen an angel of the Lord said to Philip\, ‘Get up and go toward
s the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (This is
a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eun
uch\, a court official of the Candace\, queen of the Ethiopians\, in charg
e of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was retu
rning home\; seated in his chariot\, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Th
en the Spirit said to Philip\, ‘Go over to this chariot and join it.’
So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked\
, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ He replied\, ‘How can I\
, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to get in and sit bes
ide him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:\n
‘Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter\,\n and like a lamb silent
before its shearer\,\n so he does not open his mouth.\nIn his humil
iation justice was denied him.\n Who can describe his generation?\n
For his life is taken away from the earth.’\nThe eunuch asked Philip
\, ‘About whom\, may I ask you\, does the prophet say this\, about himse
lf or about someone else?’ Then Philip began to speak\, and starting wit
h this scripture\, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they
were going along the road\, they came to some water\; and the eunuch said
\, ‘Look\, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?’
He commanded the chariot to stop\, and both of them\, Philip and the eunu
ch\, went down into the water\, and Philip baptized him. When they came up
out of the water\, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away\; the eunu
ch saw him no more\, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himse
lf at Azotus\, and as he was passing through the region\, he proclaimed th
e good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.\n\nJohn 15.1-8\n
‘I am the true vine\, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every
branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes
to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word th
at I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch
cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine\, neither can yo
u unless you abide in me. I am the vine\, you are the branches. Those who
abide in me and I in them bear much fruit\, because apart from me you can
do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and
withers\; such branches are gathered\, thrown into the fire\, and burned.
If you abide in me\, and my words abide in you\, ask for whatever you wish
\, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this\, that you
bear much fruit and become my disciples.\n\nWe pray for all who live and w
