Hymns Old & New\n\n16	All hail the power of Jesus’ name\n190	Forty days
and forty nights\n161	Father hear the prayer we offer\n379	Lead us heavenl
 y Father (tune Mannheim)\n\nThe Collect\n\nAlmighty God\,\nwhose Son Jesu
s Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness\nand was tempted as we are\,
yet without sin:\ngive us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to yo
ur Spirit\;\nand\, as you know our weakness\, so may we know your power to
save\;\nthrough Jesus Christ\, your Son our Lord\,\nwho is alive and reig
ns with you\,\nin the unity of the Holy Spirit\, now and for ever. Amen\n\
 nReadings: Genesis 2.15-17\; 3.1-7\; Romans 5.12-19\; Matthew 4.1-11\n\nGe
nesis 2.15-17\, 3.1-7\n15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the gar
den of Eden to till it\nand keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man
\, ‘You may freely\neat of every tree of the garden\; 17 but of the tree
of the knowledge of\ngood and evil you shall not eat\, for in the day tha
t you eat of it you shall\ndie.’\n3 Now the serpent was more crafty than
any other wild animal that\nthe LORD God had made. He said to the woman\,
‘Did God say\, “You\nshall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’
2\n\nThe woman said to the serpent\, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the tr
ees in the garden\; 3\n\nbut God said\, “You shall not eat of the fruit
of the tree that is in the middle of the\ngarden\, nor shall you touch it\
, or you shall die.”’ 4 But the serpent said to\nthe woman\, ‘You wi
ll not die\; 5\n\nfor God knows that when you eat of it your\neyes will be
opened\, and you will be like God\, knowing good and\nevil.’ 6 So when
the woman saw that the tree was good for food\, and that\nit was a delight
to the eyes\, and that the tree was to be desired to make\none wise\, she
took of its fruit and ate\; and she also gave some to her\nhusband\, who
was with her\, and he ate. 7\n\nThen the eyes of both were\nopened\, and t
hey knew that they were naked\; and they sewed fig leaves\ntogether and ma
de loincloths for themselves.\n\nRomans 5.12-19\n12 Therefore\, just as si
n came into the world through one man\, and death\ncame through sin\, and
so death spread to all because all have sinned— 13 sin was indeed in the
world before the law\, but sin is not reckoned\nwhen there is no law. 14
Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to\nMoses\, even over those whose s
ins were not like the transgression of\nAdam\, who is a type of the one wh
o was to come.\n15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the
many died through\nthe one man’s trespass\, much more surely have the gr
ace of God and\nthe free gift in the grace of the one man\, Jesus Christ\,
abounded for the\nmany. 16 And the free gift is not like the effect of th
e one man’s sin. For\nthe judgement following one trespass brought conde
mnation\, but the\nfree gift following many trespasses brings justificatio
 n. 17 If\, because of\nthe one man’s trespass\, death exercised dominion
through that one\,\nmuch more surely will those who receive the abundance
of grace and\nthe free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life th
rough the one\nman\, Jesus Christ.\n\n18 Therefore just as one man’s tre
spass led to\ncondemnation for all\, so one man’s act of righteousness l
eads to\njustification and life for all. 19 For just as by the one man’s
disobedience\nthe many were made sinners\, so by the one man’s obedienc
e the many\nwill be made righteous.\n\nMatthew 4.1-11\n4 Then Jesus was le
d up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted\nby the devil. 2 He f
asted for forty days and forty nights\, and afterwards he\nwas famished. 3
\n\nThe tempter came and said to him\, ‘If you are the Son of\nGod\, com
mand these stones to become loaves of bread.’ 4 But he\nanswered\, ‘It
is written\,\n“One does not live by bread alone\,\nbut by every word th
at comes from the mouth of God.”’\n5\nThen the devil took him to the h
oly city and placed him on the pinnacle\nof the temple\, 6\n\nsaying to hi
m\, ‘If you are the Son of God\, throw yourself\n\ndown\; for it is writ
ten\,\n“He will command his angels concerning you”\,\nand “On their
hands they will bear you up\,\nso that you will not dash your foot against
a stone.”’\n7\nJesus said to him\, ‘Again it is written\, “Do not
put the Lord your God to\nthe test.”’\n8 Again\, the devil took him t
o a very high mountain and showed him all\nthe kingdoms of the world and t
 heir splendour\; 9\n\nand he said to him\, ‘All\nthese I will give you\,
if you will fall down and worship me.’ 10 Jesus said\nto him\, ‘Away
with you\, Satan! for it is written\,\n“Worship the Lord your God\,\nand
serve only him.”’\n11 Then the devil left him\, and suddenly angels c
ame and waited on him.\n\nThis week we pray for all who live and work in A
shton Terrace\, Gordon Road\, Consort Road and Sun Hill\; and the parish o
 f St. John's\, Northwood.\n\nPlease see attached for Sunday Notes.\n\nAll
are welcome to our family friendly services that last approximately 1 hou
r and are live streamed on YouTube. Well behaved dogs are welcome.\nRefres
 hments are served afterwards.
