Amen\ n\nReadings\n\nGenesis 22.1-18 \nThe Command to Sacrifice Isaac\n\n22 Afte r these things God tested Abraham. He said to him\, ‘Abraham!’ And he said\, ‘Here I am.’ 2 He said\, ‘Take your son\, your only son Isaac \, whom you love\, and go to the land of Moriah\, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ 3 So Abr aham rose early in the morning\, saddled his donkey\, and took two of his young men with him\, and his son Isaac\; he cut the wood for the burnt-off ering\, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had sho wn him. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men\, ‘Stay here with the donkey\; the b oy and I will go over there\; we will worship\, and then we will come back to you.’ 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and laid it on h is son Isaac\, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two o f them walked on together. 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham\, ‘Father! ’ And he said\, ‘Here I am\, my son.’ He said\, ‘The fire and the wood are here\, but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?’ 8 Abraham s aid\, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt-offering\, my son. ’ So the two of them walked on together.\n\n9 When they came to the plac e that God had shown him\, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac\, and laid him on the altar\, on top of t he wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill h is son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven\, and said\ , ‘Abraham\, Abraham!’ And he said\, ‘Here I am.’ 12 He said\, ‘ Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him\; for now I know tha t you fear God\, since you have not withheld your son\, your only son\, fr om me.’ 13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram\, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt-offe ring instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place ‘The Lord will provide’\; as it is said to this day\, ‘On the mount of the Lord it sh all be provided.’\n\n15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven\, 16 and said\, ‘By myself I have sworn\, says the Lor d: Because you have done this\, and have not withheld your son\, your only son\, 17 I will indeed bless you\, and I will make your offspring as nume rous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And y our offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies\, 18 and by your off spring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves\, b ecause you have obeyed my voice.’ \n\nJohn 19.17-41\n 17 and carrying th e cross by himself\, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull\ , which in Hebrew[a] is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him\, and with him two others\, one on either side\, with Jesus between them. 19 Pi late also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read\, ‘Je sus of Nazareth\,[b] the King of the Jews.’ 20 Many of the Jews read thi s inscription\, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the c ity\; and it was written in Hebrew\,[c] in Latin\, and in Greek. 21 Then t he chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate\, ‘Do not write\, “The Kin g of the Jews”\, but\, “This man said\, I am King of the Jews.”’ 2 2 Pilate answered\, ‘What I have written I have written.’ 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus\, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts\, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic\; now the tun ic was seamless\, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another\, ‘Let us not tear it\, but cast lots for it to see who will get it.’ This was to fulfil what the scripture says\,\n\n‘They divided my clothes among themselves\,\n and for my clothing they cast lots.’\n\ n25 And that is what the soldiers did.\n\nMeanwhile\, standing near the cr oss of Jesus were his mother\, and his mother’s sister\, Mary the wife o f Clopas\, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the discip le whom he loved standing beside her\, he said to his mother\, ‘Woman\, here is your son.’ 27 Then he said to the disciple\, ‘Here is your mot her.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.\n\n28 After this\, when Jesus knew that all was now finished\, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture)\, ‘I am thirsty.’ 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the wine\, he said\, ‘It is finished.’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit .\nJesus’ Side Is Pierced\n\n31 Since it was the day of Preparation\, th e Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath\, espe cially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pi late to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw t hat he was already dead\, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead\, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear\, and at once blood and water came out. 35 (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true\, and he knows[d] that he tells the truth.) 36 These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled\, ‘None of his bones shall be broken.’ 37 And again another passage of scripture says\ , ‘They will look on the one whom they have pierced.’\nThe Burial of J esus\n\n38 After these things\, Joseph of Arimathea\, who was a disciple o f Jesus\, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews\, asked Pila te to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission\; so he came and removed his body. 39 Nicodemus\, who had at first come to Jes us by night\, also came\, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes\, weighing about a hundred pounds. 40 They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it wit h the spices in linen cloths\, according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified\, and in th e garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. \n\nAll are welcome to our family friendly services that last approximately 1 hour and are live streamed on YouTube.
