DESCRIPTION:The service of Tenebrae – meaning “darkness” or “shado
 ws” - has been practised by the church since medieval times as an import
 ant part of holy week. \n\nIn this service\, we will experience only a sma
 ll portion of Christ’s pain and \nsuffering on the day of His crucifixio
 n. One of the most conspicuous features \nof the service is the gradual ex
 tinguishing of candles until only a single candle\, \nconsidered a symbol 
 of our Lord\, remains. \nAs it gets darker and darker\, we  can reflect on
  the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus that e
 vening. \nToward the end of the service\, the Christ candle is hidden\, ty
 pifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good. At the very 
 end\, a loud noise is made\, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of his
  death (Matthew 27) \nand his resurrection (Matthew 28:2). \nAt the moment
  of the earthquake\, the temple veil was torn apart\, making the Holy of H
 olies exposed to public view.\nThis is understood to represent God’s cha
 nge toward us with direct access to \nhim\, no longer requiring the ceremo
 nial acts of the priests for our forgiveness \nof sin. \nThe hidden candle
  is then restored to its place\, symbolizing the triumph \nof good over ev
 il. By this single light we all depart this service in silence. \n\nServic
