 This illustrated talk explores how the crushing defeat of a Viking raiding
  army in 910 helped secure Mercia and laid the path for the English reconq
 uest of the Danelaw and a unified English monarchy.  It also reveals Æthe
 lflæd’s remarkable leadership as Lady of the Mercians: builder of forti
 fied burhs such as Bridgnorth\, strategist\, patron (Much Wenlock) and pow
 erbroker.  Bridgnorth’s commanding position on the River Severn and Much
  Wenlock’s religious heritage show how local places were bound into a mu
 ch larger national story of war\, faith\, identity and political survival.
   From Viking raids and battlefield uncertainty to royal patronage and fro
 ntier defence\, the talk brings the so-called Dark Ages vividly to life an
 d explains why these events matter to the history of the Shropshire\, the 
 Midlands and England.
