DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent - a se
 ason of reflection\, penitence and fasting\, and of preparation for Easter
 . The Imposition of Ashes will take place during our services of Holy Comm
 union - the ashes are blessed and the sign of the cross is made\, in ash\,
  on the forehead of worshippers.\n\nAshes are an ancient sign of penitence
 \, and from the Middle Ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being ma
 rked in ash with the sign of the cross. It is for that reason that the fir
 st day of Lent – Ash Wednesday – is so called.\n\nAsh is a sign of mor
 tality - a reminder that we shall all die. The sign of the cross reminds u
 s of Jesus' death - which was followed by his being raised to new life. As
 h Wednesday reminds us that through 'dying' to all that is self-centred in
  our lives\, we may\, through faith in Jesus\, share in the fullness of li
 fe he came to bring.
