the Latin Adventus\,\nmeaning coming. During the 4 th and 5 th century it
\nwas a season of preparation for the baptism of new\nChristians at the Fe
stival of Epiphany.\n40 days were spent in penance\, prayer and fasting.\n
By the 6 th century Advent was tied to the ‘coming’\nof Christ – his
second coming in the clouds as judge\n\nof the world.\n\nDuring the Middl
e Ages Advent became linked to\nChristmas. Nowadays there are 4 Sundays in
\nAdvent\, balancing elements of remembrance and\nanticipation. The first
2 Sundays look forward to\nChrist’s second coming and the last 2 look\nb
ackwards to remember Jesus’s first coming as a\nbaby in the manger in Be
thlehem.\nIt is difficult to keep in mind\, during the hustle and\nbustle
and stress of December\, that Advent is\nintended to be a season of fastin
g\, and reflection\non all the evil in the world - and there is certainly\
nenough of that at the moment. - A time to cry out\nfor God to make things
right and to put death’s\n\ndark shadows to flight.\n\nA time to look a
t our own lives and where we have\ngone wrong\; a time of contemplation on
our need\nfor God’s grace and healing touch.\nO come Thou Day-Spring Co
me and cheer\nOur spirits by thy Advent here\nDisperse the gloomy clouds o
f night\nAnd death’s dark shadows put to flight\nRejoice! Rejoice! Emman
 uel\nShall come to thee\, O Israel.\nPlease support Revd Claire\, the cong
regation of St\nJohn the Baptist and the White Ladies Aston\nSingers on Su
nday at 6.00pm as they prepare for a\nnew and exciting service for Advent
 – an Advent\nCarol Service with wonderful strong and dark\nAdvent music
and hymns and the Old Testament\nreadings preparing us for Advent. Please
do go\nalong. You will be made very welcome!\nNext Friday 8 December pleas
e again venture out\nfor 6.00pm\, this time to The Crown in Peopleton\nwhe
re a group of people\, led by Revd Claire will re-\nenact the Christmas Na
tivity Story. Then warm up\n\nin the pub afterwards!
