DESCRIPTION:Bowland Benefice\nPews News\n31 December 2023\n\nFirst Sunday
 after Christmas\n\nCollect\nAlmighty God\,\n\nwho wonderfully created us i
n your own image\nand yet more wonderfully restored us\nthrough your Son J
esus Christ:\ngrant that\, as he came to share in our humanity\,\nso we ma
y share the life of his divinity\;\nwho is alive and reigns with you\,\nin
the unity of the Holy Spirit\,\none God\, now and for ever. Amen.\nThis W
 eek in the Benefice\nSunday\n31 December\n\n10.30am Benefice Holy\nCommuni
 on in\nBroughton\nHackett\n\nSunday\n7 January\nThe Epiphany\n\n10.30am Fa
 mily Service\nin Upton\nSnodsbury\n11.00am Holy\nCommunion in\nPeopleton\n
6.00pm Evensong in\nWhite Ladies\nAston\nUnfortunately Revd Claire has suc
cumbed to a heavy\ncold\, sore throat and lost her voice but I am very\npl
eased that The Venerable Frank Bentley (retired\nArch Deacon from Worceste
 r) will take the Benefice\nService of Holy Communion at St Leonard’s.\nW
e are all so grateful that he has ‘stepped into the\n\nbreach’ at the
last minute.\nWe wish Claire a very speedy recovery.\nRing out\, wild bell
s\, to the wild sky\,\nThe flying cloud\, the frosty light:\nThe year is d
ying in the night\;\nRing out\, wild bells\, and let him die.\nRing out th
 e old\, ring in the new\,\nRing\, happy bells\, across the snow:\nThe year
is going\, let him go\;\nRing out the false\, ring in the true…\n(Alfre
d Lord Tennyson)\n\nAs we begin 2024 we look again at this ancient\n\nNew
Year Carol\n\nHere we bring new water from the well so clear\,\nFor to wor
ship God with\, this happy New Year.\n\nChorus\n\nSing levy dew\, sing lev
y dew\, the water and the wine\;\nThe seven bright gold wires and the bugl
es that do\n\nshine.\n\nSing reign of Fair Maid\, with gold upon her toe\,
\nOpen you the West Door\, and turn the Old Year go.\n\nChorus.\n\nSing re
ign of Fair Maid\, with gold upon her chin\,\nOpen you the East Door\, and
let the New Year in.\n\nChorus.\n\nThis traditional folksong is thought t
o recall an old\nWelsh Folk Custom when very early on New Year&#39\;s\nDay
around three or four o&#39\;clock in the morning\,\ngroups of boys visite
d the houses in the\nneighbourhood\, carrying a vessel of fresh cold sprin
 g\nwater and twigs of box\, holly\, myrtle\, rosemary or\n\nother evergree
ns.\n\nUsing the twigs they sprinkled the hands and face of\nanyone they m
et for a penny or two.\nIn every house\, each room was sprinkled with New\
nYear&#39\;s water and the inmates\, who were often still in\nbed\, wished
a Happy New Year. For this service and\nthe good wishes the boys were qui
te often also given\n\nsmall coins.\n\nIn the light of everything that is
going on\, it is so easy\nto get despondent and ask why things are happeni
ng\nas they are. There seems to be unhappiness and pain\n\nwherever we loo
k.\n\nI believe that if life is to have meaning and purpose\nwe need to be
gin with ourselves\, our relationships\nand our faith and so as we look fo
rward to 2024 with\nall its joys and challenges to come\, I dare offer and
\nshare this ancient Sandskrit philosophy with you.\nLook well to this day
\, for it is life\, the very best of life.\nIn its brief course lie all th
e realities and truths of\n\nexistence\,\n\nthe joy of growth\, the splend
our of action\, the glory of\n\npower.\n\nFor yesterday is but a memory an
d tomorrow is only a\n\nvision.\n\nBut today\, if well-lived\, makes every
yesterday a\nmemory of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of\n\nhope.\
n\nLook well therefore to this day.\nPrayer for New Year\n\nLord help me t
o remember that nothing is going to\nhappen to me this new year that you a
 nd I together\n\ncan’t handle. Amen.
