on\nLeslie Dale - Funeral on Wednesday\nWe think of Julia and family at th
is time.\nBless those who mourn\, eternal God\,\nwith the comfort of your
love\nthat they may face each new day with hope\nand the certainty that no
thing can destroy\nthe good that has been given.\n\nA short meditation and
prayer for the\nFourth Sunday in Lent\nLord\, grant us simplicity of fait
h\nand a generosity of service\nthat gives without counting cost.\nA life
overflowing with Grace\npoured out from the One\nwho gave everything\,\nth
at we might show\nthe power of love\nto a broken world\,\nand share the tr
 uth\nfrom a living Word.\nLord\, grant us simplicity of faith\,\nand a yea
rning to share it.\nMothering Sunday\n\nMothering Sunday was originally a
time when people\nreturned to the church where they were baptised. It\nbec
ame the custom for young people who worked in\nlarge houses to be given th
e day off on Mothering\nSunday to visit their own mothers and they often t
 ook\ngifts of food\, flowers or hand-me-down clothing from\n\ntheir employ
ers.\n\nPeople fasted and ate simply during Lent\, but this was\nrelaxed f
or Mothering Sunday and Simnel Cakes were\noften prepared and shared with
the family.\nA Simnel Cake is a light fruit cake decorated with 11\nMarzip
an balls representing the Disciples\, excluding\nJudas. Legend has it that
it was named after Lambert\nSimnel who worked in the kitchens of Henry VI
I\n\naround the year 1500.\n\nIt is a time to remember and be grateful for
the love\nand guidance of mothers and the security of home\nand family li
fe. Places of rest\, laughter and\nforgiveness. Places just ‘to be’.\n
\nA time to remember all those who have never and will\nnever experience t
he happiness and protection of a\nstable\, loving home. We think of all th
ose uprooted by\nwar\, politics and natural disasters struggling to protec
t\nand maintain their families and keep children safe.\nA Prayer for Mothe
ring Sunday\nLoving God\, on Mothering Sunday we thank you for\nmothers
 – for all they mean or have meant\;\nfor the love they have shown and th
e care and\nguidance they have given.\nWe thank you for their qualities of
patience\,\nkindness\, concern and understanding.\nWe thank you for the p
art they play in our lives.\nWe thank you for this day of saying ‘thank
you’ -\nfor this opportunity to say what we so often mean\n\nto say but
so rarely do.\nFor mothers and motherhood\,\nfor fathers\, children and fa
milies.\nWe bring you this day our grateful praise. Amen.
