One of the very best loved parts\nof the Bible is Luke 2: 46-55 – the Magnificat - sung\ndaily by Anglicans across the world. Pure poetry!\nMy soul doth magnify the Lord :\nand my spirit hath rejoice d in God my Saviour.\nFor he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmai den.\n\nFor behold\, from henceforth :\nall generations shall call me ble ssed.\nFor he that is mighty hath magnified me :\nand holy is his Name.\n And his mercy is on them that fear him :\nthroughout all generations.\nHe hath shewed strength with his arm :\nHe hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their\n\nhearts.\n\nHe hath put down the mighty from their seat :\nand hath exalted the humble and meek.\nHe hath filled the hungry with good things :\nand the rich he hath sent empty away.\n He rememberi ng his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel :\nas he promised to our fore fathers\, Abraham and his seed for\n\never.\n\nWe are in Peopleton this mo rning and in the church of\nSt Nicholas but…….Who was St Nicholas?\nNi cholas was born of rich Greek parents on 15 th March\n270AD and he dedicat ed his life to serving God\nshowing generosity and concern to all those in need.\nHe became Bishop of Myra at a very young age and\nunder the Roman Emperor Diocletian was exiled and\nimprisoned. On his release he attended the ground\nbreaking Council of Nicea in AD325. This was the first\nworldw ide gathering of Christian leaders\, called by\nEmperor Constantine and wa s responsible for setting\ndown Christian beliefs in the Nicene Creed and also\ncalculations for when Easter is celebrated.\nHis acts of love and ch arity became legendary and\nthere are many stories recorded of his extraor dinary\ndeeds as a protector and helper of those in need.\nHe restored to life 3 young theological students who\nwere robbed and murdered by an innk eeper and then\nhidden in a large pickling tub. Nicholas prayed and\nthey were restored to life and wholeness.\nHe provided dowries for the 3 daught ers of a poor\nman. This way they could be married rather than be\n\nsold into slavery.\n\nThus he became the patron and protector of children.\nOn his way back from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land\,\nhe calmed a storm\, sav ing the lives of the terrified\nsailors and becoming the patron of sailors and\n\nvoyagers.\n\nHe died on 6 th December 343AD and this day is widely \ncelebrated throughout Europe as a day for gift-giving\nfor children.
