More information from Helen (381490)\n\nor Janet (381379).\n\nAs I put this weekend’s Pe ws News together – it’s\nThursday – A Level exam results have been p ublish\nbringing a variety of emotions and anxieties….. Some\nyoung peop le will be joyous and looking forward to\nuniversity\, college\, apprentic eships or a working life\nwhilst others will feel disappointed and be desp airing\n– whatever the day brings for those children and\ngrandchildren who we love\, help us to reassurance\nthem all that life is much more than exam success and\n\nacademic achievement.\n\nHelp them all to be what the y want to be not what the\nworld dictates they should be………\nThis we ek we are in St Kenelm’s\, Upton Snodsbury\,\n\nbut who was St Kenelm?\n \nLegend tells us that Kenelm was the son of a Mercian\nking\, Kenwulph wh o died in 819AD when Kenelm was\nonly 7. Kenwulph founded Winchcombe Abbey .\nFamily jealousy and intrigue followed the king’s death\nand Kenelm (n ow a boy king) was beheaded and\nburied on the orders of his elder sister Quendryda\,\nwhilst singing a Te Deum on a visit to Kenelstowe in\nthe Cle nt Hills. (Kenelstowe is now part of the village\nof Romsley) Heaven took a hand as a heavenly dove\ninformed the Pope of Kenelm’s murder and he s ent\nmonks from Winchcombe to find the body and carry\n\nhim home.\n\nAs t he monks approached a particular thicket near\nRomsley\, they saw a shinin g light\, dug and found\nKenelm’s body. As they lifted him up water spra ng\nforth and out flowed a stream. These waters\nafterwards became known f or their healing qualities\n\nand a well-head was erected.\n\nOn the way t o Wincombe\, Kenelm’s body rested over\nnight in the church in Upton Sno dsbury and when\ncrossing the River Avon near Fladbury\, monks from\nWorce ster Cathedral claimed the body too. Eventually\nKenelm’s body\, carried by exhausted Winchcombe\nmonks\, and still being chased by the Worcester\ nmonks\, was within sight of Wincombe. The monks\nstruck the ground with a staff and a spring burst out\nto refresh them for the rest of the journey .\nSt Kenelm was buried solemnly at Winchcombe\nAbbey\, miracles were repo rted at his tomb and\, as\nmentioned in The Nun’s Priest’s Tale in Cha ucer’s\nCanterbury Tales\, the shrine became a place of\n\npilgrimage.\n \nWinchcombe Abbey\, disappeared but in the parish\nchurch of St Peter in Winchcombe\, in the 19 th century\,\n2 stone coffins were discovered and a re believed to\ncontain the relics of St Kenelm and his father King\n\nKen wulph.\n\nSt Kenelm’s Day is 17 July and for many years a village\nfair was held in Romsley to mark the day when the\nancient custom of ‘Crabbin g the Parson’ took\nplace…bombarding the unfortunate cleric with a\nvo lley of crab apples……Look out Claire your days are\n\nnumbered!
