diers.\n\nToday is the last Sunday of this Christian Year before a\nnew ye
ar next Sunday - being Advent Sunday.\nToday is dedicated to Christ the Ki
ng - a festival only\ninaugurated in 1925 by Pope Pius X1 in honour of the
\nKingship of Christ. In the era of post first world war\nsecularism\, he
perceived a model of Christ as King of\nCreation\, whose just and gentle r
ule is supreme.\nA Prayer for Today Christ the King\nMajestic and all enco
mpassing God\, you are the\nauthority over everything that exists in all o
f creation\,\nand yet you are one with us and we are one with you.\nWe bri
ng before you now in our thoughts and prayers\,\nour hopes and dreams for
a better world\, better\nhuman relationships and of lives restored to\n\nw
holeness.\n\nIn all parts of our lives we acknowledge you King of\nall and
seek no more for ourselves than your\n\ngrace allows. Amen.\n\nToday was
always know as Stir-up Sunday – a\ntradition\, dating back to the Victor
ian era - the day\nwhen families would gather and ‘stir’ their homemad
e\nChristmas pudding five weeks before Christmas\, on\nthe last Sunday bef
ore the season of Advent begins.\nWhy stir up? Because of the opening word
s\nof the Collect set in the Book of Common Prayer\nStir up\, we beseech t
 hee\, O Lord\, the wills of thy\nfaithful people that they\, plenteously b
ringing forth\nthe fruit of good works\, may of thee be plenteously\nrewar
ded\, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.\n\nA meaning of Advent\nAdvent\
, like Lent\, is a season for prayer and\nreformation of our hearts. Since
it comes at\nwintertime\, fire is a fitting sign to help us to celebrate\
nAdvent……if Christ is to come more fully into our lives\nthis Christma
s\, if God is to become really incarnate for\nus\, then fire will have to
be present in our prayer. Our\nworship and devotion will have to stoke the
kind of\nfire in our souls that can truly change our hearts. Ours\nis a g
reat responsibility not to waste this Advent time.\n(Edward Hays A Pilgrim
’s Almanac).\nAs we look around at our wonderful world at the\nmisery\,
destruction and war which man has reeked on\nthe planet\, it is very easy
to become totally despairing\n– so what to do? We can only do small thin
gs.\nI am reminded of a quote from the Prophet\nMuhammad. The best among y
ou are those who bring\n\ngreatest benefit to others.\nHope for today\n\nW
e look forward to the time when the power of love\nwill replace the love o
f power.\nThen our world will know the blessings of peace.\n(William Glads
