anuary to Saturday 25 January\nHeavenly Father\, As we gather together to
day\, we ask\nfor your spirit of unity to be present among us.\nThis week
in the Church Calendar so often slips by\nwithout notice but looking at th
e state of our world\nand our churches\, what could be more important?\nTh
ere are a lot of resources and help on-line for\nprayers\, reflection and
a useful pamphlet to\ndownload and print off.\nThe theme this year is Do y
ou believe this?\nThis week’s materials have been prepared by the\necume
nical community at Bose in Northern Italy.\nThis year we celebrate an anni
versary - 1\,700\nyears since the Council of Nicaea was in session\,\nwhen
the Nicene Creed was devised. The council\nsat from May to August 325. Th
is Creed\, said\nat most Communion Services is at the heart of our\n\nChri
stian Faith.\n\nReflecting this\, the scripture readings for this year’s
\n\nUnity Week focus on belief.\nWe are invited to reflect on the story of
Martha’s\nconfession of faith in Jesus as narrated in\n\nJohn 11:17-27.
\n\nWe are all called to reflect on Jesus’ provocative\nquestion to Mart
ha: “Do you believe this?”\nA prayer from 2016 Unity Week\nLord Jesus\
, you commanded us to break bread\ntogether &amp\; to drink one cup in rem
embrance of you.\nOpen the hearts and minds of Christians world-wide\,\nes
pecially those entrusted with leadership in your\nChurch\, to the joys and
blessings of this fellowship.\nCreate in all of us a passion to realise t
he hope to\nwhich you have called us: one body and one Spirit\,\none Lord\
, one baptism\, one God who is above\nand through and in all. Amen.\nMonda
 y 20 January\n\nTomorrow in the United States is a Federal Holiday to\ncom
memorate the life of the black civil rights leader\nMartin Luther King Jnr
\, assassinated in 1968.\nPerhaps too it is an important time for us\, thi
s side of\nthe Atlantic\, to reflect on where we have got to\nalmost 60 ye
ars on – quite a sobering thought I feel.\nA Prayer written in his memor
y\nO God\, we thank you for the fact that you have\ninspired men and women
in all nations\,\nall cultures and all faiths.\nGrant that we will follow
you and become so\ncommitted to your way and your kingdom\,\nthat we will
be able to establish here a kingdom of\n\nunderstanding\,\n\nwhere men an
d women will live together as brothers\nand sisters and respect the dignit
y and worth of every\n\nhuman being.\n\nIn the name and spirit of Jesus. A
 men.
