 \, knowing my hand is held in Yours.\n\nWednesday is St Valentine’s Day 
 and\, as we know\,\ncelebrated with flowers\, chocolates and anonymous\n\n
 declarations of love……..\nBut who was Valentine?\n\nLike most of our o
 ld traditions his life and times are\nshrouded in the mists of centuries.\
 nThe most popular myth is that he was a Christian\nPriest in Rome in the t
 ime of Emperor Claudius 11\, in\n\nthe third century AD.\n\nThe Emperor de
 cided that soldiers should not marry\nas it made them bad soldiers. (I sup
 pose he thought\nthat the presence of a woman would take a soldier’s\nmi
 nd off the job in hand!). So marriage in the military\n\nwas banned!\n\nVa
 lentine\, being a courageous priest with principles\,\nbroke the law and c
 ontinued to conduct marriage\nservices for soldiers. He was discovered and
  thrown\n\ninto prison.\n\nThe story goes that there he fell in love with 
 his\njailer’s daughter. He was sentenced to death and\nexecuted on 14 Fe
 bruary. His last act was to write to\nhis belovéd – a love letter signe
 d from your Valentine.\n\nA Prayer for St Valentine’s Day\nEternal God\,
  we offer our thanks that through our\nearthly lives you speak of your ete
 rnal life.\nWe rejoice in the wonder of creation\,\nthe gift of human life
  and the many blessings that our\n\nrelationships bring.\nRenew in us the 
 fruits of your Holy Spirit\;\nthat love\, joy and peace may abound in our 
 homes\,\nthrough Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.\nBut Wednesday is also\, of 
 course\, Ash Wednesday\nHow appropriate to celebrate human love and loyalt
 y\nwith St Valentine as we begin the six weeks of prayer\nand meditation r
 emembering Jesus’s love and\n\nsacrifice for us all?\n\nServices for Ash
  Wednesday will be held at 10.00am\nin Fladbury and 7.00pm in Peopleton.\n

 eeling – Peace.\nIn my being – Peace.\nIn my thinking – Peace.\nIn m
 y speaking – Peace.\nIn my doing – Peace.\nIn my travelling – Peace.
 \nIn my sleeping – Peace.\nIn my whole being – the Peace far beyond my
 \n\nunderstanding.\n\nFor it is the Peace which is of God and which is God
