ed the charity Onwards and Upwards which\naims to support and change the l
ives of ex-prisoners\,\nwill be coming along to tell us about its work.\n\
nLent is a time of preparation\, waiting and penitence\nand the five weeks
of Lent leading up to Holy Week\nmake for an appropriate time to reflect
 upon our own\nlives - our struggles\, our goals\, our prayers - in light o
 f\nChrist’s life\, death and resurrection.\nThe second week’s theme is
Forgiveness and\n\nCommunity\n\nThe reading for this week is Ephesians 4:
31-32 – a\npassage on letting go of anger and bitterness and\nforgiving
those who have sinned against us.\nIn this second week of Lent\, we are e
xploring what it\nmeans to be forgiven by God\, and consequently what\nfor
giveness looks like in our own relationships and\n\nchurch communities.\n\
nThis is such an important area to consider both on\nour own and communall
y\, and Lent is a great time to\nreflect and deal with what is sometimes a
very\ndifficult and challenging subject.\nThe tradition of giving somethi
ng up over Lent can be\na hugely beneficial practice\, but it’s importan
t we\ndon’t turn it into a time of discipline for the sake of\ndisciplin
 e\, or a season of self-improvement purely for\n\nour own sake.\n\nAre we
giving up chocolate to help draw our sight\ntowards God and as an act of s
piritual discipline\, or\nbecause we want to be a bit healthier and feel b
etter\nabout ourselves over a time that it is popularly\nconsidered a deto
 x period?\n\nThere is nothing wrong with the latter\, but the former\nis s
urely what Lent is meant to be about.\nForgiveness is perhaps the ultimate
call to ‘give\nsomething up’\; it is the process in which we are able
\,\nby the grace of God\, fully and lovingly to ‘let go’ of the\nthing
s which might be damaging our relationships -\nthings done to us or things
that have happened\n\nbetween us.\n\nThis can be a long and difficult pro
cess\, but the truth\nof Easter is that forgiveness is possible\, not only
for us\nas sinners but for us as those who have been sinned\nagainst by b
rothers and sisters.\nGod welcomes everyone\, no matter who you are or\nwh
at you’ve done. Forgiveness and community\;\nharmony and love are possib
le for us because of who\nGod is and what He has done for us. His death on
the\ncross\, and the celebration on Easter Day tells us of\nthe unending
and unlimited love and support\navailable to us in all our human relations
hips today.\n\nA Prayer\n\nGod\, help us to be a community of loving peopl
 e. We\npray you’ll be the centre of and inspiration for all of\nour rela
tionships\, inside and outside the Church. Help\nus to live in the reality
of your love and forgiveness\ntoday by forgiving others who have hurt us.
Help us to\nforgive ourselves\, too\, as we know in our hearts the\npower
of your forgiveness over us. Amen.
