out? Please do\ncome along to find out – you will be made very\n\nwelcom
e!\n\nNext Tuesday at 7.30pm\, St Nicholas Church\, will hold\nits Annual
Parochial Church Meeting in the church. If\nyou are on the Electoral Roll
you are entitled to\n\nattend.\n\nClaire writes: it was good to see so man
y of you at the\nCafé church service in Peopleton last Sunday. We\nlearne
d a lot from Stef Jones about how trust in God\ncan lead to life-changing
actions for both ourselves\n\nand others.\n\nJoin us again in a few months
  for this different way of\n‘doing’ church - companionship\, music\, p
rayer and of\ncourse refreshments. Keep an eye open for posters.\n\nLent i
s a time of preparation\, waiting and penitence\nand the five weeks of Len
t leading up to Holy Week\nmake for an appropriate time to reflect upon ou
 r own\nlives - our struggles\, our goals\, our prayers - in light of\nChri
st’s life\, death and resurrection. We continue to\nfollow Stuart Townen
 d through our Lenten journey.\nThe fourth week’s theme is God’s Love\n
The reading for this week is Luke 15: 11-32 (the\nparable of the prodigal
son)\n\nPart of understanding the wonder of the events of\nEaster weekend
is to understand the love that was\nshown to us individually through Chris
 t’s life\, death\n\nand resurrection.\n\nAnd part of Lent’s preparatio
n is not only to confess\,\nforgive and fast\, but also to prepare our min
ds by\ndwelling on the wonder that God Himself loves us.\nTraditionally\,
the time of Lent focuses on bodily and\nphysical tasks or sacrifices which
help to lift our\nmind’s eyes up towards God.\nThese can be helpful and
powerful practices. It is\nimportant\, however\, that we never view these
\ndisciplines as a way of earning or achieving greater\n\nstanding with Go
d.\n\nHis love for us never changes\, and no Lenten fasting\nor improved p
rayer life changes how he feels about\nus. In all of Lent’s waiting and
penitence\, perhaps the\nmost crucial and spiritually mature thing to try
and get\nto grips with\, is that these practices do not affect\n\nGod’s
love for us!\n\nWe are free from trial and effort when it comes to our\nre
lationship with God. The other side of this\, of\ncourse\, is if you’re
having a ‘bad Lent’ - maybe you\ndidn’t even realise we are even in
Lent! - then God\nloves you no less\, thinks of you no less and your\nrela
tionship with him is just as rich and healthy as\n\nanyone else’s.\n\nIt
is also important to recognise that sometimes we\nare weary and in need o
f rest. This is true in Lent as\nwell as any other season. Dragging our bo
 dies to\ntiredness through fasting every day\, for example\, may\nnot be t
he most appropriate course of worship for you\nright now. That is OK. In t
oday’s relentless world\,\nfeeding your mind with the truth of God’s l
ove for you\ncould well serve you better than going without food at\nwork
all day. God does not call us to spend Lent\nstruggling mentally or spirit
ually for the sake of bodily\n\nsacrifice.\nA prayer\n\nGod\, never let us
forget that you are Love itself.\nDirect our vision towards this incredib
le and\n\nmysterious truth.\n\nWe thank you that you love us for who we ar
e\, for\nwho you made us to be\, and not for what we’ve done\n\nor faile
d to do.\n\nI pray your love for us will be the inspiration for our\nweek
ahead and bring us joy even in the midst of\nhardship and difficulty. Amen
