Almighty and everlasting God\,\n\nwho in your tender love towards the huma
n race sent\nyour Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him\nour flesh
and to suffer death upon the cross:\ngrant that we may follow the example
of his\n\npatience and humility\,\n\nand also be made partakers of his re
surrection\;\nthrough Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.\n\nLent is a time of pr
eparation\, waiting and penitence\nand the five weeks of Lent leading up t
o Holy Week\nmake for an appropriate time to reflect upon our own\nlives -
  our struggles\, our goals\, our prayers - in light of\nChrist’s life\,
death and resurrection.\nWe continue to follow Stuart Townend as we near t
he\n\nend of our Lenten journey.\n\nThe fifth week’s theme is Waiting\,
 Anxiety\, Trust\nThe reading for this week is Isaiah 40:3 (a passage\nabou
t the strength gained by waiting on God)\nWe spend a lot of our lives wait
ing for things.\nAnd we sometimes find some time on a Sunday to\nwait on G
od and see what he wants to do or say to us\nin a service. Learning to see
a period of waiting as\nvaluable is so important if we want to live life
to the\nfull\, whether that be five minutes in Church or a few\n\ndecades
in our private lives.\n\nThe longer you wait for something\, the more you
have\nto trust it will arrive\; and the more you have to trust\nthat the w
aiting process is happening for a reason\,\nand that God might be teaching
you things through\nthe waiting that might otherwise pass you by.\nFurthe
r\, living in a state of anxious waiting has the\npotential to remind us o
f God’s centrality in our lives.\nIt often takes the prospect of losing
something to\nremind us\, albeit perhaps painfully\, that God is indeed\nb
igger than the thing or scenario we were waiting on\n\nand hoping for.\n\n
Waiting can help us not only to deepen our trust\, but\nto heighten our li
stening and desire for God.\nLearning to see and partake in these gifts in
the midst\nof waiting can be a life changing shift for a Christian.\nI th
ink it’s important\, especially during Lent\, that the\ndays we spend an
ticipating Easter are days of value\, of\n\nlearning and of growing.\nIt m
ight be helpful to consider how this can be\nreflected in sung worship on
a Sunday\; some hymns –\nGreat is thy faithfulness and The Lord is my Sh
epherd\nfor example - are ones that focus on God’s\nunchanging faithfuln
ess through our changeable and\n\nhidden futures.\n\nIf we can enter into
a place of worship\, where we are\nseeking God’s peace in and through ou
 r worries and\nour waiting\, without sidelining or diminishing them\nand y
et without allowing them to become obstacles\nthat rival God in size and i
 mportance\, then I think we\nare in a healthy and expectant place.\n\nA pr
ayer\n\nGod\, help us to see our times of waiting as\nopportunities to gro
w in our relationship with you.\nThank you that you are with us in uncerta
inty\, offering\npeace\, joy and unchanging hope in all moments of our\nli
ves. Guard our hearts from trusting too heavily in\nearthly things and hel
p lift our vision to the eternal\npicture of who we are and what we have i
 n you.\n\nAmen.
