elevance of Ascension Day?\nIn the Church of England\, Ascension Day is a\
ncommemoration of the biblical account of Jesus\; of his\nreturn to his Fa
ther in heaven after his resurrection\nand post-resurrection appearances t
 o his disciples.\nIt marks Jesus&#39\; physical ascension into heaven\, 40
days\nafter Easter – so it is always on a Thursday.\nIt marks the end o
f his earthly ministry and the\nbeginning of his reign in heaven. \nIt re
presents a transition\; the end of the Easter season\nand anticipates the
coming of Pentecost\, when the\nHoly Spirit is bestowed upon the disciples
.\nAscension is closely linked to the theme of mission\, as\nJesus commiss
ions his disciples to continue his work\nand promises them the Holy Spirit
  as a source of\n\npower and comfort.\n\nThis week also – Monday\, Tuesd
ay and Wednesday\nare designated as Rogation Days. What are they?\nThe wor
d rogation comes from the Latin rogare to ask\nand the Rogation Days are 4
days set apart to bless\nthe fields and ask for God’s mercy on all crea
tion.\n25th April is called the Major Rogation and the days\npreceding Asc
ension Day are the Minor Rogations.\nThese days of prayer and procession w
ere instituted\nin the 5 th Century during a period of disaster and\npesti
lence to pray for good weather\, good health and\n\npardon for sins.\n\nOv
er the centuries it became the custom to use the\nprocession to beat the b
ounds (to mark the parish\nboundaries) whilst blessing the trees\, fields
and\nstones of the Parish. In the 21 st century it is a time to\nremind us
of our obligation to be good stewards of all\n\nof God’s creation.\nCre
ation Prayer\n\nGod our Father\, you created the world and sent your\nown
Son to live among us\, made of the same stuff\,\nbreathing the same air\,
marvelling at sunrise and\n\nsunset just as we do.\n\nHelp us to participa
te in the life around and within us\nas your life\, as you living in us an
d we living in you and\n\nin each other.\n\nGod of love and life\, restore
us to your peace\, renew\nus through your power and teach us to love all
that\nyou have created and to care for the earth as your gift\n\nand our h
ome. Amen.\nGod of life\,\n\nwe praise you for the beauty of creation\,\ni
ts richness and variety\;\nyet\, through greed and ignorance\,\nwe scar yo
ur world with plastic waste\nand throw so much away.\nMake us more like Je
sus\,\ntreading gently on our common home\,\nand breathe your Spirit on us
\,\nthat we may care more deeply for your Earth.\nWe ask this through Jesu
s Christ our Lord. Amen.\n\n(Rt Revd Graham Usher)
