ur Lord. Amen.\nPlough Sunday\n\nIn many rural communities the second Sund
ay in\nJanuary is traditionally Plough Sunday.\nThe Church of England says
 \, through its\nEverydayFaith initiative….\n\nThe observance of Plough S
unday on the First Sunday\nof Epiphany goes back to Victorian times\, but\
nbehind it there is a much older observance\,\nassociated with the first w
orking day after the\ntwelve days of Christmas\, hence ‘Plough Monday’
\n\nin some places.\n\nIn the Middle Ages ploughs were sometimes kept in\n
the parish church\, and some churches kept a\n‘plough-light’ – a can
dle that burned over the\nplough throughout the winter.\nIn days when work
was scarce in winter\, the\nobservance looked forward to the time of sowi
ng\nwith the promise of a harvest to come.\nSome Christian communities hav
e reintroduced it as a\nfocus for asking a blessing on human labour near\n
the start of the calendar year.\nWhilst Plough Sunday remains an important
marker\nfor the start of a new agricultural year\, this year we\nare enco
uraging all churches to use this day to\nmark the start of a new year of f
inding and\nfollowing God in everyday life: to celebrate and\npray for the
work of cultivating God’s kingdom in\nwhatever we are called to do.\nTh
e Light of God surrounds me\,\nThe Love of God enfolds me\,\nThe Power of
God protects me\,\nThe presence of God watches over me\,\nWherever I am
 – God is.
