il.com\n\nToday our lectionary suggests we observe Candlemas\nCandlemas is
  celebrated on 2 nd February and\, like a lot\nof Christian Festivals\, fi
nds some of its roots in our\npagan past. The pagan Festival of Light has
been\nincorporated into the remembrance of the baby Jesus’\nritual prese
ntation in the Temple. This takes place on\nthe 40 th day of the Christmas
/Epiphany Season.\nJesus was cradled by Simeon and called the Light of\nth
e World and\, having seen Jesus\, Simeon then\nprepared for death by recit
ing the Nunc Dimittis. This\n‘Song of Simeon’ is still a very meaningf
ul part of the\ntraditional Anglican Services of Evensong.\nCandlemas also
marks the Purification of the Blessed\n\nVirgin Mary.\n\nThis is an ancie
nt tradition when women have to be\n‘purified’ before they are allowed
\, after giving birth\,\nto take part in religious services again.\nThis t
radition was upheld in Christian churches\,\ncertainly up until my own Mot
her’s generation.\nWhereas\, in our tradition Christmas decorations are\
ntaken down before 12 th Night (eve of the Feast of the\nEpiphany)\, in ot
her traditions\, they are removed at\n\nCandlemas.\n\nIt was the custom to
o\, in former times\, to take\ncandles to church at Candlemas to have them
blessed\nbefore being used throughout the rest of the year.\n\nA prayer f
or Candlemas\nLord Jesus Christ\,\nlight of the nations and glory of Israe
l:\nmake your home among us\,\nand present us pure and holy\nto your heave
 nly Father\,\nyour God\, and our God. Amen.\n\nClaire is planning a Lent c
ourse to start on Tuesday 21\nFebruary meeting at The Crown\, Peopleton at
  7.00pm.\nClaire writes…….Our Lent course this year\, called Dust\nand
Glory\, will explore how we can live well with the\nmess of everyday life
. It encourages us to take a fresh\nlook at the frustrations and failings
that every day\nbrings and\, rather than pretending we can always\navoid t
hem\, seek to learn from them and grow closer\nto God through them. It wil
l be relaxed and a good\nchance to relate scripture to real life.\n Pleas
e let Revd Claire know if you would like to take\npart on 07921101320 or r
evdclaireb@btinternet.com\nClaire has ordered booklets for the course whic
h is\nbased on a book written by Rt Rev Dr Emma Ineson\nwho was appointed
as Bishop of Kensington just\nbefore Christmas. Her book is called Failure
: what\nJesus said about Sin\, Mistakes and Messing up and is\nthe Archbis
hop of Canterbury’s recommended read\nfor Lent 2023. It is obtainable on
the internet for\n£9.68 with the Kindle version costing £7.99.
