 ice. Also during August there will be just one\nBenefice Communion Service
  each Sunday.\nAll are welcome to the Summer Garden Party in aid of\nSt Ni
 cholas Church\, at Wolverton Hall by kind\ninvitation of Sir Nicholas and 
 Lady Georgia Coleridge.\nMeet at St Nicholas Church at 2.00pm to walk acro
 ss\nto Wolverton Hall. Tickets are £7 each (children £3) to\ninclude a g
 lass of Pimms\, tea/coffee and cake. The\nswimming pool will be available

 \n\nand Kim (840911).\n\nLast Sunday\, during my weekly phone call with my
 \nson\, he told me he had played the organ that morning\nfor the Eucharist
  service at St Kenelm’s church\,\nMinster Lovell near Witney. It was the
  special patronal\nservice as St Kenelm’s saint’s day was Monday 17 Ju
 ly.\nThere is a lot of information\, some contradictory\,\nabout St Kenelm
  on the internet. It is a fascinating\nstory and I thought I could share s
 ome of it with you.\nMaybe if you are going to the Morning Prayer service\
 nin Upton Snodsbury this weekend you could think\nback through the centuri
 es\, remember Kenelm and his\n\nconnection with our Benefice.\n\nLegend te
 lls us that Kenelm was the son of a Mercian\nking\, Kenwulph who died in 8
 19AD when Kenelm was\nonly 7. Kenwulph founded Winchcombe Abbey.\nFamily j
 ealousy and intrigue followed the king’s death\nand Kenelm (now a boy ki
 ng) was beheaded and\nburied on the orders of his elder sister Quendryda\,
 \nwhilst he was singing a Te Deum on a visit in the Clent\n\nHills.\n\nHea
 ven took a hand as a heavenly dove informed the\nPope of Kenelm’s murder
  and he sent monks from\nWinchcombe to find the body and carry him home.\n
 As the monks approached a particular thicket near\nRomsley\, they saw a sh
 ining light\, dug and found\n\nKenelm’s body.\n\nAs they lifted him up w
 ater sprang forth and out\nflowed a stream. These waters afterwards became
 \nknown for their healing qualities and a well-head was\n\nerected.\n\nOn 
 the way to Wincombe\, Kenelm’s body rested over\nnight in the church in 
 Upton Snodsbury and when\ncrossing the River Avon near Fladbury\, monks fr
 om\nWorcester Cathedral claimed the body too. And a\n\nfight ensued!\n\nEv
 entually Kenelm’s body\, carried by exhausted\nWinchcombe monks\, and st
 ill being chased by the\nWorcester monks\, was within sight of Wincombe.\n
 The monks struck the ground with a staff and a spring\nburst out to refres
 h them for the rest of the journey.\nSt Kenelm was buried solemnly at Winc
 hcombe\nAbbey\, miracles were reported at his tomb and\, as\nmentioned in 
 The Nun’s Priest’s Tale in Chaucer’s\nCanterbury Tales\, the shrine 
 became a place of\n\npilgrimage.\n\nWinchcombe Abbey\, disappeared but in 
 the parish\nchurch of St Peter in Winchcombe\, in the 19 th century\,\n2 s
 tone coffins were discovered and are believed to\n\ncontain the relics of 
 St Kenelm and his father King\n\nKenwulph.
