DESCRIPTION:Christian Aid Week 10-16 May\nPlant Sale Saturday 16 May 10-2\
n\nWhere hardship means hunger… urban farmers can grow hope. \nIn the cr
owded and noisy settlements of Nairobi\, most parents wake every single da
y knowing that they must go and earn money\, otherwise their children won
’t eat that evening. \nWith no formal work opportunities\, heartbreaking
ly low pay\, and no social support\, it’s a precarious and frightening d
aily struggle that no family should have to face.\n The aching hunger is b
ad enough. The relentless stress is overwhelming. ‘When I wake up\, I ha
ve a lot of worries. Sometimes I don't have food\,’ says Fridah Moraa\,
a recently widowed grandmother determined to support her family on what li
ttle she earns. \n \n‘Now I'm responsible for everything.’ With school
costs\, rent and water to cover\, providing food for every meal is a prob
lem that never goes away. \nBut Fridah’s faith in God\, and in her own a
bility to provide\, is unwavering. With tools\, seeds and specialist train
ing from Christian Aid’s partner\, Beacon of Hope\, Fridah’s now makin
g the most of a small space in the city to grow a steady supply of fresh v
egetables that she can cook for her family or sell on her market stall. \n
Reflecting on her new role in life\, Fridah says: 'I never thought that a
woman could also be a provider.’\nWith her inner strength\, unstoppable
resolve\, and a little help from Beacon of Hope\, Fridah is overcoming pov
erty to feed the youngest members of her family and protect them from the
threat of malnutrition. \nFridah rightly takes pride in all she’s achiev
ing: ‘When I harvest what I’ve planted\, it makes me happy. Urban farm
ing has changed my life.’\n \nChristian Aid and its supporters are joini
ng together once again during Christian Aid Week (10-16 May) to fundraise
in all kinds of ways – from coffee mornings and craft stalls to hiking a
nd biking for the 70k in May challenge. \nWith seven days to make a diffe
rence\, every gift\, act and prayer counts. What will you do to support so
meone like Fridah to grow food\, protect their children from hunger\, and
nurture hope?\n Thank you so much to everyone who has planted flowers and
has already offered to bake cakes and make soup. If you would like to volu
nteer in any way\, please sign up. \nPlease download and post our attached
plant sale poster in any suitable places you may know. Many thanks. \nFin
