DESCRIPTION:This Sung Eucharist service commemorates the Last Supper at wh
 ich Jesus gave us the new commandment that we love one another (Latin mand
 atum\, from which we derive the word Maundy). \n\nThis is the evening of t
 he Last Supper. On his final night with his disciples\, Jesus instituted t
 he Eucharist\, and commanded his disciples to wash one another’s feet\, 
 a command (mandatum in Latin)\, from which we get the name Maundy Thursday
 .  After the Last Supper\, Jesus and his disciples went out to the Garden 
 of Gethsemane\, to watch and pray\, where Jesus was arrested.\n\nAfter the
  “Stripping of the Altars”\, which recalls Christ’s arrest\, we\, to
 o\, will have the opportunity to stay awhile\, to watch and pray with the 
 Lord\, in the Sacrament Altar after this service. The service will end wit
 h an informal dispersal\, but all are invited to remain for this “Watch
 ”.\n\nKeep ‘watch’\nFollowing the service\, all are welcome to keep 
 ‘watch’ until 10.00pm in St Gluvias Church\, as we follow the example 
 of the first disciples\, who waited with Our Lord in the Garden of Gethsem
 ane.

  Christians have done since the earliest days of the Church\, not to mourn
  the death of Christ\, but to celebrate the triumph of the cross. Yet it i
 s still a very real and solemn liturgy we are about to celebrate\; a litur
 gy which brings the power and effect of Good Friday into our lives in a ve
 ry real way. So the vestments are blood-red in honour of the victory which
  gives all martyrdom and death its meaning.\n\nThe liturgy has a feel of r
 estraint and awe in response to Jesus’ death upon the cross.\n\nAs the s
 ervice details the suffering and death of Jesus Christ it may not be suita
 ble for younger children.
