Sea Sunday – The Ministry of Fags
July 12th 2020 was Sea Sunday. God willing, we open our churches for worship again at St Giles the Abbot, Cheadle and St Chad’s, Freehay this forthcoming Sunday, so I took the opportunity to go and live feed the Good News of Jesus Christ by the sea in Barmouth.
I was staying in The Vestry of Ebenezer Chapel and got up at 3am to wave my friends off who were going out fishing. At 4am, I was sitting by the harbour enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the sound of the sea contemplating a reflection for the live feed worship and I heard a young couple nearby having a very aggressive domestic argument. The lad, was shouting at the young woman to give him a fag and she was withholding the fag from him, they had clearly had a lot to drink and it was disturbing. “Surely Lord, I haven’t got to get involved with this” I asked “I am craving peace”. But the fact was I had my packet of fags with me and knew I had the potential to breathe calm into the situation. So, I walked over to them and offered the young man a cigarette and a light which started a conversation with them both. By the end of it, they decided that they had been visited by an angel of peace. “I ain’t no angel” I said, “Just a Vicar who needs to give up the fags!”.
I see that my friend Revd Joe Cant was creatively trying to raise charitable funds by singing or playing favourite hymns by request last week in Church Corner. As fags are likely to wreck my voice, I’d like to give up the ministry of fags. So, if you would like to sponsor the Rector to give up fags, she is committing to do this from Sunday 19th July 2020 with praise to God for the reopening of the churches in this parish and for giving her the motivation, breathing peace in a different way! Any giving will be donated to The Flying Angels who have a mission to sea farers and to the work of the Parish of St Giles the Abbot and St Chad’s Freehay. Donations can be made at www.missiontoseafarers.org/donate or www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cheadlefreehay. Time to quit smoking and stay alive for those close to me!
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I don not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27) Breathe it, and know it!
