Jesus has described the Christian life as a life of taking up our cross and following him. In Mark 9:30-50 he teaches his twelve disciples more of what this entails. Based on the priorities of this world it will appear that the first are last and the last are first. He is more concerned with rewarding faithful service than offering reward for attaining some privileged status. The cost of following Jesus may be great, but it soon becomes apparent – the cost of not following him his even greater.
